A history of forging his own path
EAM’s history is one filled with logic-based, contrarian moves that have fueled Mark’s success.
In 2008, Mark’s advice was to ignore the doomsayers and buy municipal bonds at bargain prices. In 2009, as the markets turned pessimistic, Mark advised clients to seize the buying opportunity. In 2011, Mark instructed his clients to buy single family real estate, allowing them to take advantage of perhaps once-in-a-lifetime investments in real assets. More recently, EAM bet big on the undervalued and overlooked Puerto Rico COFINA bonds. While the final chapter in this story remains to be told, that investment also appears to have beaten the odds.
Where did it all begin?
Mark has always been fascinated with investing and the inner workings of the global economy. Yet Mark’s path to becoming an investment advisor was not direct. Rather than attending business school, Mark first obtained a degree in molecular biology from the College of Charleston before enrolling in Dartmouth Medical School in 1996. Despite his interest in biological systems and medicine, however, Mark could not resist the call of the markets and he eventually chose to leave medical school.
In 1999, Mark began offering investment advisory services to high net worth individuals. Initially, Mark chose to work only with a few select individuals. As he started to have more requests to manage money on a formal basis, he decided to work with a larger organization that would take care of his administrative tasks so he could focus on his research.
Going all-in with full independence
In 2006, Mark decided to build his own firm so he could be in full control of all aspects of his clients’ relationships and needs. To minimize his time spent on regulatory compliance, Mark joined with a larger advisory firm in 2012. This relationship continued while Mark travelled to and expanded EAM’s presence in China before ending in 2015. In order to have complete control of the client experience and business operations, he added James (Jay) Sparks as a principal in 2016. Jay’s expertise in fixed income trading was crucial in building the firm’s largest single-security position to date. James’ business operations background is also pivotal as he oversees EAM’s expansion.
Currently, Elliott Asset Management is a stand-alone registered investment advisor certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mark and the EAM team provide investment advisory services to individuals who are willing to invest where others fear to tread and commit to a ride-to-the-end investment strategy.
